People Flow

The Exhibition
From May 20 to November 26, 2023, the European Cultural Centre (ECC) invited architects, artists, and creative professionals from around the world to explore the themes of time, space, and existence. Held at Palazzo Bembo, Palazzo Mora, and the Marinaressa Garden, the exhibition served as an inclusive platform for fostering inspiration and innovation.

People Flow – A wayfinder’s perspective
At the “Time Space Existence” exhibition in Palazzo Bembo, Moniteurs presented the People Flow installation. It visualized movement possibilities within a building, illustrating how people navigate and which modes of transport they prefer. The display made it possible to explore invisible movement patterns and orientation strategies within a space.

“People Flow” offers an unusual approach to visualizing and understanding predictable paths in built environments. For this representation, Moniteurs selected a typical European transportation hub. It reveals an invisible world of movement and allows exhibition visitors to experience space from a wayfinder’s perspective.

Moniteurs begins every wayfinding system by analyzing movement patterns. Which paths are highly frequented, which are less used? Where do routes intersect? Which crossings might be overlooked, from what distance, and at what speed? By addressing these questions as designers, we can influence and support people on their journeys while helping cities reduce their carbon footprint.

The viewer has the opportunity to interact with the model. The viewing distance to the model affects the speed at which users move within the simulation.
The interactive simulation of the model shows a transportation hub with different levels, including their escalators and elevators. Two user groups are represented: users with mobility impairments in orange, and all others in green.
Pictograms play an important role in the development of wayfinding systems. They are quick to read and internationally understood. A unique representation of them was displayed as wallpaper on the back wall.

People Flow from Different Perspectives
To explore the topic of People Flow from various angles, Moniteurs invited interesting personalities throughout the exhibition period for discussions and exchanges.
