Isotype and beyond

Lecture in the Economic Museum in Vienna

The lecture by Sibylle Schlaich is about the design of a gender-neutral pictogram. A pictogram must be unambiguous. However, the more versatile the message to be communicated, the more difficult it is to design. The necessary abstraction may neglect important distinguishing features. In fact, some pictograms do not distill the essentials, but seek their uniqueness based on non-essential externals. A gender-neutral pictogram is a contradiction in terms.

Moniteurs Airport Signage in a Book

After the successful book on orientation systems by Per Mollerup was published at the end of last year, there is now a second book on the topic, completely revised and with a greater practical section. It will mainly cover orientation systems for major projects and public spaces. The orientation system for the Berlin Brandenburg Airport by Moniteurs is also among the selected works covered.

The Märkische Quarter

Orientation System

The Märkische Quarter in Berlin is a metropolitan area of 3.2 square kilometres with nearly 40,000 residents, the orientation of which is not easy. The district office of Berlin Reineckendorf recently held a competition to redesign the orientation system, which Moniteurs won in 2013, and the firm, accompanied by the environmental psychologists from PSY:PLAN, will be working on a new concept. PSY:PLAN will research and consult for the project in the fields of architecture and the psychology of perception. Moniteurs already worked intensely in this area in 2006, developing an orientation system for several residential buildings for the organisation Gesobau.

Type Talk, on the 28th of November at 6:30pm with Heike Nehl and Sibylle Schlaich, on the visual identity of the Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which has not yet opened: the orientation system, closely connected to the corporate design elements, and with its own font, has long made headlines in the international design scene. Organised by Jürgen Siebert, the free “Type Talk” series takes place monthly in the Apple Store on Kurfürstendamm.

Gold!

Fontwalk wins at the Annual Multimedia Award

“Fontwalk” wins “Gold” at this year’s Annual Multimedia Award. Since 1996, the competition has shone a spotlight on outstanding work in the digital domain. Moniteurs developed the microsite “Fontwalk” for Fontshop, which showcases the latest fonts and trends in the world of typefaces. At “Fontwalk”, the user is guided on a journey through the fonts, where moving pictures illustrate the history of each font while simultaneously highlighting its unique qualities and features.

Guest professor in Hangzhou, China

This Autumn, Sibylle Schlaich and Heike Nehl are guest professors in China at the Chinesisch Deutschen Kunstakademie (Chinese German Academy of the Arts) in Hangzhou. 1:1 – Signage Orientation Identity

Book by Moniteurs

“1 : 1 – Signage, Orientation, Identity” is a special book. It not only describes the projects of the last ten years and the way of working of the communications design company Moniteurs, but the projects are also graphically brought into focus: in this way the book shows Moniteurs’ orientation systems on a 1 : 1 scale. Book launch Tuesday, 24th September, 7pm, Reading Room, Berlin, Guest Speaker: Jürgen Siebert
