Mannheim now has a new art hall. With the new build­ing, gmp, von Gerkan, Marg and Part­ners Ar­chi­tects re­alised the ar­chi­tec­tural idea of a “city within a city”. In anal­ogy to the space-form­ing el­e­ments of the city – house and block, street and square – var­ied tours through closed and open spaces with al­ter­nat­ing views are cre­ated for the vis­i­tors. Moni­teurs was com­mis­sioned for the ana­logue and dig­i­tal vis­i­tor guid­ance sys­tem and for the ini­tial graphic equip­ment of the ex­hi­bi­tions in co­op­er­a­tion with Axel Ku­fus / OH Stu­dio, re­spon­si­ble for in­te­rior de­sign. In terms of de­sign, the ori­en­ta­tion sys­tem fits into the ar­chi­tec­ture of the Kun­sthalle, thereby sig­nif­i­cantly sup­port­ing the iden­tity of the build­ing and car­ry­ing it nat­u­rally into the very last cor­ner of the build­ing.

At the cen­tre of Dres­den, a place of en­counter and ex­change is go­ing to be re-opened – the Kul­tur­palast. The listed build­ing, re­stored and re­designed by gmp Ar­chi­tects, unites mu­sic, knowl­edge and the­atre un­der one roof. In the fu­ture, a di­verse range of peo­ple will move through­out the Kul­tur­palast. They all have dif­fer­ent needs and will be look­ing for dif­fer­ent spaces within the build­ing. As the flows of move­ment of each vis­i­tor group – vis­i­tors to the li­brary, the phil­har­monic and the cabaret – con­verge, in­ter­sect and sep­a­rate, it is para­mount to pro­vide op­ti­mal wayfind­ing in­for­ma­tion at every point in their jour­ney.

Deutsches Mu­seum is an out­stand­ing lo­ca­tion for im­part­ing sci­en­tific and tech­ni­cal knowl­edge and for a con­struc­tive di­a­logue be­tween sci­ence and so­ci­ety. Es­tab­lished in 1903, it is steeped in tra­di­tion, and with a to­tal ex­hi­bi­tion space of 66,000 sqm, it is one of the largest in the world. Since Oc­to­ber 2015, a part of the ex­hi­bi­tions on the mu­seum is­land have been up­dated and re­designed.
